As an Indian wedding gathers a family back together, parents Rafiq and Layla must reckon with the choices their children have made. There is Hadia: their headstrong, eldest daughter, whose marriage is a match of love and not tradition. Huda, the middle child, determined to follow in her sister’s footsteps. And lastly, their estranged son, Amar, who returns to the family fold for the first time in three years to take his place as brother of the bride. What secrets and betrayals have caused this close-knit family to fracture? Can Amar find his way back to the people who know and love him best?

A Place for Us takes us back to the beginning of this family’s life: from the bonds that bring them together, to the differences that pull them apart. All the joy and struggle of family life is here, from Rafiq and Layla’s own arrival in America from India, to the years in which their children—each in their own way—tread between two cultures, seeking to find their place in the world, as well as a path home.

A Place for Us is a book for our times: an astonishingly tender-hearted novel of identity and belonging, and a resonant portrait of what it means to be an American family today. It announces Fatima Farheen Mirza as a major new literary talent.

A place for us by Fatima Farheen Mirza it’s a beautiful story about Muslim- American family and love. I love this book because this is a portrait of a normal family with challenges and joys. This is a story about how to belong and how to be part of a community and how to be a family.

A place for us begins with Hadia’s wedding where all the members of the family are reunited after years.  The readers can learn the story of this family of five because the story is told in the voices of the family members, Layla the mother, Rafiq the father, Amar the youngest brother and Hadia the first daughter.

We can feel their emotions and their feelings and we can understand their mistakes and their need to be good and to be a family. Also, we can feel the struggle of every character to be good and to belong in their family. Layla is trying to be a good mother for his children and to be a good wife for her husband, Amar is trying to belong and to have faith, and to be enough for his parents, Hadia is trying to prove that even if she is a girl, she is enough and Rafiq is trying to be a good father and husband. The most important thing is that everyone in this book made mistakes but they love each other and family is everything for them.

“But I did fight. I tried to leave every human I have interacted with better than or the same as when I encountered them….It was the way I wanted to move through the world….That was my fight: to continue to do little things for people around me, so no one would find fault in my demeanor and misattribute it to my religion.”

A place for us is a story about love, the love between husband and wife, the first love and the love between parents and children. This is a story about faith and how to be Muslim. My advice to you is to love the characters and to don’t judge them. I recommend to everyone to read A place for us. A place for us is a masterpiece about family.

‘There is another way. Come back, and we will make another path.’ And if he says no, and if he says nothing, will you say this: ‘I used the wrong words. I acted the wrong ways. I will wait, until you are ready. I will always wait for you.’
