From #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Cassandra Clare comes the first novel in a brand-new trilogy where evil hides in plain sight and love cuts deeper than any blade. Chain of Gold is a Shadowhunters novel.

Cordelia Carstairs is a Shadowhunter, a warrior trained since childhood to battle demons. When her father is accused of a terrible crime, she and her brother travel to London in hopes of preventing the family’s ruin. Cordelia’s mother wants to marry her off, but Cordelia is determined to be a hero rather than a bride. Soon Cordelia encounters childhood friends James and Lucie Herondale and is drawn into their world of glittering ballrooms, secret assignations, and supernatural salons, where vampires and warlocks mingle with mermaids and magicians. All the while, she must hide her secret love for James, who is sworn to marry someone else.

But Cordelia’s new life is blown apart when a shocking series of demon attacks devastate London. These monsters are nothing like those Shadowhunters have fought before—these demons walk in daylight, strike down the unwary with incurable poison, and seem impossible to kill. London is immediately quarantined. Trapped in the city, Cordelia and her friends discover that their own connection to a dark legacy has gifted them with incredible powers—and forced a brutal choice that will reveal the true cruel price of being a hero.

MY REVIEW

“There is no better distraction in this world than losing oneself in books for awhile.”

Cassandra Clare is one of my favorite authors and she wrote two of my favorites series The Mortal Instruments and The Dark Artifices. I loved Jace and Clary and Julian and Emma, they are two of favorites couples. I also read The Infernal Devices but I didn’t love this series the same as the other two.  I was so excited when I found out that Cassandra Clare had a new series come out and couldn’t wait to read this new series The Last Hours. I love the Shadowhunter world created by Cassandra Clare and I love how she can write in the same world about many characters but I don’t feel that she tells the same story.

“Will sat down beside his wife and pulled her into his lap. “I am going to kiss your mother now,” he announced. “Flee if you will, children. If not, we could play Ludo when the romance is over.”
“The romance is never over,” said James glumly.
Tessa laughed and put up her face to be kissed.”

In Chain of Gold, we meet new characters and we see the old characters Tessa and Will and Jem. I loved to see Will and Tessa as a couple and as parents.

We meet the new characters of this series James, Cordelia, Lucie, Anna, Thomas, Alistar, Christopher, Jesse, Grace, and Matthew. All of them are brave and wonderful but my favorite characters of Chain of Gold are James, Cordelia, Lucie, Matthew and Christopher.

James is a sweetheart and protective, loyal and a little naive. James is the leader of his group of friends and he leans to his friends to solve their problems. He is very protective of his sister Luce and his parabatai Matthew. He learns something  important about his power and his heritage in this book. James takes care of his friends.

“He sat down on the edge of Lucie’s bed—and immediately leaped back up, blushing. Lucie took her hands off her hips, amused.
“A ghost with a sense of propriety. That is funny.”
He looked at her darkly. He really did have a most arresting face, she thought. His black hair and green eyes made a wintry contrast against his pale skin. As a writer, one had to pay attention to these things. Descriptions were very important.”

Lucie is a sweet girl and she wants to be a writer and she can speak with ghosts. Lucie loves to be with her brother James and to tease him. She has a very interesting relationship with Jesse and I cannot wait to see more about their relationship and how their relationship will evolve.

“They need a muse, said Anna. Someone to be inspired by. Someone to know their secrets.Would you like to be a muse?

No, said Cordelia. I would like to be a hero. “

Cordelia is a fierce girl who wants to be a hero and to help her family. She and Alistar, have an interesting relationship as brother and sister. She will be the parabatai of Lucie and she is a great friend for Lucie and Anna. She is in love with James and she admired him.

Matthew is the parabatai of James and he is the joker of the group. He is a great friend and protector. I love him and cannot wait to see what Cassandra Clare will do with this character.

For ten years in the Shadowhunter world was peace without demons but now the demons attack the Shadowhunters in the daylight and James and his friends want to kill the demons.

“I never quite thought of friendship like that—as something that makes you more than you are.”

I love the friendship between the main characters and how they work together to solve their problems. I love the banter between them. I gave this book 4.5 stars because of the love triangle. I feel that this book doesn’t need the love triangle and I’m so tired of the love triangle in books. Overall I loved Chain of Gold and the new characters and I cannot wait to read more about their journey in the next book.
