Rating: 4.5 STARS
Crazy Rich Asians is the outrageously funny debut novel about three super-rich, pedigreed Chinese families and the gossip, backbiting, and scheming that occurs when the heir to one of the most massive fortunes in Asia brings home his ABC (American-born Chinese) girlfriend to the wedding of the season.
When Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home, long drives to explore the island, and quality time with the man she might one day marry. What she doesn’t know is that Nick’s family home happens to look like a palace, that she’ll ride in more private planes than cars, and that with one of Asia’s most eligible bachelors on her arm, Rachel might as well have a target on her back. Initiated into a world of dynastic splendor beyond imagination, Rachel meets Astrid, the It Girl of Singapore society; Eddie, whose family practically lives in the pages of the Hong Kong socialite magazines; and Eleanor, Nick’s formidable mother, a woman who has very strong feelings about who her son should–and should not–marry.
Uproarious, addictive, and filled with jaw-dropping opulence, Crazy Rich Asians is an insider’s look at the Asian JetSet; a perfect depiction of the clash between old money and new money; between Overseas Chinese and Mainland Chinese; and a fabulous novel about what it means to be young, in love, and gloriously, crazily rich.
I admit I saw the first movie and I liked the movie and then I decided to read the book. Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan was a fun read about three super-rich families from Asia. It was interesting for me to read about rich families and how they live. I liked reading about how a normal girl like Rachel can navigate the world of rich families where everything is about money and who is your family.
Crazy Rich Asians begin with Nicholas Young who is inviting his girlfriend of two years to go with him in Asia, to spend the summer with him and his family. Rachel accepted the invitation but she didn’t know that her boyfriend Nicholas Young is super-rich and is one of the most eligible bachelors on Asia.
“This place is very real. You’re the dream,” Nick answered as he kissed her deeply.”
Rachel gets to meet the most three super-rich families from Asia and she was impressed by their wealth but for her was important that the family of Nicholas accept her. I liked that for her the most important thing was her relationship with Nicholas, not the fact that he is rich. Rachel was interested to meet his parents to learn more about the childhood of Nicholas. Nicholas is a good man who loves Rachel and he chooses Rachel against his family’s wishes. For Nicholas, Rachel is his dream girl.
“She wasn’t a rebel, because to call her one would imply that she was breaking the rules”
I liked Astrid who is a good woman who loves her husband and her child. She wants to have a happy marriage and to make her husband happy. I want to know more about her and her story.
The world of rich Asians was wonderful, it was interesting to read about how they spend their money and how is to be rich. I don’t think that I would like to live in their world but I enjoyed reading about their lives. Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan was a fun read with drama and right now I’m reading the second book of this trilogy. Read this book if you want to read about the lifestyle of rich people about gossips and about families.
