A Maiden…

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

A Duty…

The entire kingdom’s future rests on Poppy’s shoulders, something she’s not even quite sure she wants for herself. Because a Maiden has a heart. And a soul. And longing. And when Hawke, a golden-eyed guard honor bound to ensure her Ascension, enters her life, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need. He incites her anger, makes her question everything she believes in, and tempts her with the forbidden.

A Kingdom…

Forsaken by the gods and feared by mortals, a fallen kingdom is rising once more, determined to take back what they believe is theirs through violence and vengeance. And as the shadow of those cursed draws closer, the line between what is forbidden and what is right becomes blurred. Poppy is not only on the verge of losing her heart and being found unworthy by the gods, but also her life when every blood-soaked thread that holds her world together begins to unravel.

From Blood and Ash is the first book in the series Blood and Ash by Jennifer Armentrout. Jennifer Armentrout is one of my favorite authors and she wrote two of my favorite series Lux and Covenant. I loved this book and the story between Poppy and Hawke.

“I was the Maiden, the Chosen … I wasn’t Poppy but a shadow of a person who wasn’t allowed to experience, need, live, or want.”

Poppy is the Maiden and because of that Poppy’s life never was her own, she wasn’t allowed to have friends, to talk to anyone except her guards and her maid. She lived a solitary life with so many rules and she is waiting for the day of her Ascensions but until then she wants to really live. Poppy is a fierce woman who isn’t afraid to risk her life for the people around her or to protect them.

“You’re important to me, Poppy. Not because you’re the Maiden, but because you’re… you.”

When she meets  Hawke she was attracted to him but she knew that she can’t be with him because she is the Maiden, so she pretended to be someone else for a night and to live a little without rules. But she didn’t know that Hawke will become her guard and he will discover that she is the woman.  Hawke keeps her secret and she learned to trust in him. Hawke becomes her friend and she feels that she can talk about anything with him including her Ascensions.

“Would you love to hear that I really like you?” he asked.
My heart skipped a beat, but I ignored the stupid organ. “Would you be sad if I said no?”
“I’d be devastated.”

The relationship between Hawke and Poppy slowly developed through the whole book from friends to lovers.  I enjoyed their relationship. From Blood and Ash have everything friendship, betrayal, great world-building, secrets, and so many twists and turns. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series and I’m glad that I had to wait just two weeks. I recommend to everyone who enjoys a fantasy book.\
