Growing up, Jude McCallister was the bane of my existence.
My best friend. Fiercest ally. The most annoying boy in the world.
At eighteen, the boy I loved to hate became the man I couldn’t live without.
We were young. Madly in love. Invincible.
Strong enough to weather any storm.
Cocky enough to believe that no amount of time or distance could destroy us.
When Jude finally returned home from overseas, it should have been cause for celebration. But the man I’d fallen in love with was gone, and in his place was someone I no longer recognized.
I can’t do this, the note said. I’m sorry.
Now, after six long years he’s back. Only my heart … it doesn’t beat just for him anymore.
When the Stars Fall by Emery Rose is the first book in the series Lost Stars and is the story of Jude and Lila. Childhood sweethearts are one of my favorite tropes.
“What happens when the stars fall, Jude?”
“I’ll put them back in the sky for you,”
Lila and Jude meet when they were kids and they become fast friends because Lila is a girl who loves a dare and Jude loves to mess with her. They formed a strong bond and easily they fall in love.
“Love tested your limits. It was so damn easy to fall in love. So easy to love a person when times were good. The real challenge was sticking it out even when the going got rough.”
Jude was the town’s golden boy and he dreams to enlist and follow his father’s footsteps and he wanted his life to count and to fight for his country. After Lila and Jude graduated, Jude enlisted in the Marines and Lila went to college. And for five years, they had a relationship at distance and they had a strong relationship and they made plans for their future together.
“Was there a chance she could still love my broken, fucked-up self? The man who had lost part of his soul to a war and his entire heart to a girl?”
When Jude returned from the war, he was damaged and he didn’t know how to deal with his demons. He didn’t know how to be a good partner to Lila and to seek help for his problems.
She was it for me. My once in a lifetime love. My reason. My past, present, and my future.
Their love was strong enough to overcome their problems and to find their way to each other. I love the story of Lila and Jude because was beautiful and realistic. When the Stars Fall was about a second chance, forgiveness, and love.
