The mesmerizing adult debut from Leigh Bardugo, a tale of power, privilege, dark magic, and murder set among the Ivy League elite

Galaxy “Alex” Stern is the most unlikely member of Yale’s freshman class. Raised in the Los Angeles hinterlands by a hippie mom, Alex dropped out of school early and into a world of shady drug-dealer boyfriends, dead-end jobs, and much, much worse. In fact, by age twenty, she is the sole survivor of a horrific, unsolved multiple homicide. Some might say she’s thrown her life away. But at her hospital bed, Alex is offered a second chance: to attend one of the world’s most prestigious universities on a full ride. What’s the catch, and why her?

Still searching for answers, Alex arrives in New Haven tasked by her mysterious benefactors with monitoring the activities of Yale’s secret societies. Their eight windowless “tombs” are the well-known haunts of the rich and powerful, from high-ranking politicos to Wall Street’s biggest players. But their occult activities are more sinister and more extraordinary than any paranoid imagination might conceive. They tamper with forbidden magic. They raise the dead. And, sometimes, they prey on the living.

Leigh Bardugo is one of my favorite authors and one of my top five auto-buy authors. I wasn’t sure if I would like this book because isn’t my favorite genre but I loved everything about Ninth House. I love Alex Stern and Darlington.

“I want to survive this world that keeps trying to destroy me.”

Alex Stern is a survivor and she is a strong girl who knows how to survive. Alex Stern received a chance to a new life, at Yale and she had to left behind her past life. At Yale, she had the job of monitoring the activities of secrets societies with Darlington.  She was recruited by the House of Leche because she sees ghosts since she was a kid. Darlington id her mentor and he had to help her to understand the secrets of the Houses and to help to navigate this world.

“Only two things kept you safe: money and power.”

Everything was fine in her new life for Alex until Darlington disappear and a dead girl was found on the campus of Yale. She didn’t what to do without Darlington and she wished that Darlington will come back. But she felt that something more about the death of this girl and began to investigate her death and the mystery around this girl.

“They’d made the mistake of teaching him he could survive”

Ninth House is told by Alex and Darlington between the present and the past. We learned more about the life of Alex until she arrived at Yale. We learned more about Darlington and how he learned ghosts and the Houses. Darlington is very different than Alex but in a weird way, they complete each other. Darlington is a great mentor and a great character. I can’t wait to learn more about him and to see how his relationship with Alex will evolve. I think that Darlington will be good for Alex and good for her.

Alex and Darlington are two very complex characters. I’m curious to learn more about them in the next book. Ninth House is a great combination of mystery and fantasy. I recommend to everyone Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo but it’s still a dark book.

Trigger warnings: drug abuse, drug rape, rape child, rape, murder, violence, and self-harm.
